Hardy Chair

Hardy chair by David Irwin for Another Country.

The Hardy Windsor back chair was commissioned to celebrate Another Country's fifth anniversary. The brief requested from the three designers selected to make furniture inspired by the history and landscape of Dorset, from where the company operates.

This lead David Irwin to explore the culture and stumble upon Thomas Hardy's poem, Old Furniture. It is an ode to beauty of furniture being handed down the generations, and David Irwin's Hardy chair is a classic in the making.
Two chair typologies from the 19th century, Thomas Hardy's birth century, inspired its design: firstly the Captain's chair originally a low-backed wooden armchair and secondly, the Smokers bow, a low back Windsor, often used in smoking rooms, public houses, barbers shops, and cottages.

“At the start of the poem Hardy reminisces about old family furniture passed down through generations and I drew parallels here with my own work.” Irwin explains.
