Tugendhat Chair

Tugendhat Chair by Mies Van der Rohe for Knoll.

Designed in 1929 for the Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic, Mies van der Rohe's Tugendhat Chair was born out of the architect's endeavours to create a chair which combined the comfort of an upholstered lounge chair with the strength of a tubular steel cantilever base.

Originally named  Federsessel, which translates from German to mean 'spring chair', the Czech villa was so widely reported on that the chair came to be known as the Tugendhat Chair.

The Tugendhat was introduced to the market shortly after the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and received little commercial success as it was deemed too costly to mass-produce. It debuted around the same time as the iconic Barcelona chair, and despite receiving higher acclaim, the Tugendhat was Mies' favourite of the two.

The elegant lounge chair was re-launched by Knoll at the Salone del Mobile 2024 and is available in a wide range of upholstery options. It features two un-tufted cushions and optional armrests, offering high levels of comfort through its cantilevered base and leather strap back.
