Stool 60 Lokki
Artek + Marimekko Stool 60 Lokki by Alvar Aalto for Artek.
To mark its 90th anniversary, Artek has partnered with Finnish lifestyle and fashion brand Marimekko in a collaboration that highlights their shared values. The project focuses on their strong visual identities, influenced by architecture, nature, and a human-centered design philosophy. It combines Marimekko’s art of printmaking with Artek’s wood-bending technology.
The patterns featured were originally created by Maija Isola in the 1950s and 60s as part of her Arkkitehti (Architect) series for interiors. The collaboration explores how Isola’s strong, repetitive motifs can be reimagined on Alvar Aalto’s birchwood furniture.
For this limited edition, Isola’s Lokki (Seagull) pattern is featured on the iconic Stool 60. Designed by Aalto in 1933, the stool’s three bent legs and round seat exemplify both technical innovation and visual simplicity. This leg construction became a hallmark of Aalto’s work.
Lokki was inspired by the soft, undulating shadows cast by sunlight filtering through the folds of a curtain. This interplay of light and form led to its wave-like, monochromatic graphic. On the stool, the pattern is rendered using a refined marquetry technique, translated into contrasting wood grains. The result is a subtle shimmer that shifts with light and movement. This method also reflects both brands’ sustainability commitments by minimising wood waste.
Available to order until 31st December 2025.
