Bench 153B Kivet

Artek + Marimekko Bench 153B Kivet by Alvar Aalto for Artek.

As part of the 90th Anniversary Artek + Marimekko collaboration, the Bench 153B is reimagined with Maija Isola’s bold Kivet (Stones) pattern, created in 1956 for her Arkkitehti (Architect) interior series. The graphic forms are translated into the seat’s birch surface through a refined marquetry technique, where contrasting wood grains bring depth and movement to the iconic print.

Designed by Alvar Aalto in 1945, Bench 153B is a later addition to his signature L-leg collection - a technical innovation that allows the legs to join directly to the seat without complex joinery. This method, both elegant and efficient, became a foundational element of Aalto’s design language.

Isola’s Kivet pattern is said to have been inspired by the large, rough-edged stones cleared by hand from the yard of her atelier. Its strong, irregular shapes contrast with the bench’s minimal profile, while the marquetry introduces a tactile surface that shimmers subtly with change in light and movement. As with the other pieces in the series, the production process reflects Artek and Marimekko’s shared commitment to reducing material waste.

This limited edition of Bench 153B brings together two enduring Finnish design legacies, united by shared values: openness to global influence, deep respect for nature, and a distinctly Finnish sense of independence and community. It highlights the meeting of Aalto’s structural clarity and Isola’s expressive printmaking in a piece that feels both grounded and quietly dynamic.

Available to order until 31 December 2025.
