Stool 60 Seireeni
Artek + Marimekko Stool 60 Seireeni by Alvar Aalto for Artek.
To mark its 90th anniversary, Artek has collaborated with iconic Finnish brand Marimekko on a distinctive design partnership. The collaboration reflects shared values: a curiosity toward global ideas and friendships, respect for nature, and a balance of independence and community rooted in Finnish culture. It brings together Marimekko’s art in printmaking with Artek’s technology of wood bending.
The patterns chosen were designed by Maija Isola in the 1950s and 1960s as part of her Arkkitehti (Architect) series for interiors. Each is grounded in the natural world, echoing Aino and Alvar Aalto’s belief in human-centered design and natural materials.
For this limited anniversary series, a section of Isola’s Seireeni (Siren) pattern appears on the birch surface of the iconic Stool 60, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1933. The stool’s design, with its round seat and three bent legs, is simple, but its innovation lies in the unique bend of the legs, a defining feature of Aalto’s furniture.
Seireeni was inspired by Isola’s travels in Greece in the early 1960s, where the rhythm of water informed her work. The pattern is rendered on wood using a refined marquetry technique. This method translates the bold forms of the prints into contrasting wood grains, creating a subtle shimmer that shifts with light and movement. The process also reflects both brands’ commitment to sustainability by minimising wood waste.
Available to order until 31st December 2025.
