Stool 60 Kivet
Artek + Marimekko Stool 60 Kivet by Alvar Aalto for Artek.
To celebrate its 90th anniversary, Artek has partnered with fellow Finnish design house Marimekko in a collaboration that highlights their shared values: openness to global influences, deep respect for nature, and a uniquely Finnish sense of independence and community. The project combines Marimekko’s art in print design with Artek’s technology in wood bending.
The featured patterns were originally created by Maija Isola during the 1950s and 60s for her Arkkitehti (Architect) interior series. Rooted in the natural world, these designs align with Aino and Alvar Aalto’s philosophy of using natural materials and a human-cantered approach to design.
As part of the anniversary edition, Isola’s Kivet (Stones) pattern is applied to the surface of the classic Stool 60, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1933. With its three L-shaped legs and circular seat, the stool is deceptively simple; however, its signature bent leg design has become a hallmark of Aalto’s work.
The Kivet pattern is thought to have been inspired by the large, rough stones cleared by hand from the grounds of Isola’s home studio. The pattern is adapted to wood through a precise marquetry process, which recreates the bold shapes using contrasting wood grains. This creates a subtle shimmer that changes with movement and light. The technique also aligns with both brands’ environmental commitments by reducing wood waste.
Available to order until 31st December 2025.
