Simon Phipps Poster | Fairwater Shopping Precinct

Poster | Fairwater Shopping Precinct by Simon Phipps for The Wrong Shop.

Fairwater Shopping Precinct, Cwmbran, captured here through the lens of Simon Phipps, was originally designed by Gordon Redfern and built in 1967 as part of the Cwmbran Development Corporation’s postwar vision.

This work forms part of a new series that explores the staircase as a sculptural object, where structure, light, and material converge. Surfaces carry the passage of time, while the geometry of the space retains a quiet sense of purpose and resilience.

Phipps, who has spent over two decades documenting Britain’s postwar modernist architecture, approaches each subject with a sculptor’s eye and a filmmaker’s sensitivity to light and sequence. The result is an image that reveals atmosphere and form in often-overlooked places, inviting a slower and more attentive way of seeing.
