A freestanding staircase is set against its surroundings, its form drawn out by shifting light and shadow. What might normally be a transitional element becomes the focus, clear, structured, and unexpectedly expressive in its isolation.

Part of Phipps’ ongoing series on the staircase as a sculptural object, the work reflects his long engagement with Britain’s post-war modernist architecture. With a background in sculpture and film, he approaches each image with a sensitivity to composition, material and atmosphere, revealing the quiet presence of spaces often passed without notice.
