Genie Chair | Special Edition by Mentsen for Very Good & Proper.
The Genie Lounge Chair, designed by the London-based Japanese duo Mentsen, fuses minimalist design with contemporary comfort. Inspired by the iconic curves of Aalto’s Paimio chair and Breuer’s Isokon Long chair, the Genie features a non-rigid sling seat and back, offering a modern twist on classic design.
In collaboration with Blackhorse Lane Atelier, London’s only craft jean maker, this limited edition combines Japanese denim with premium European fabrication. Available in two exclusive denim sling and seat pad options, both are crafted for timeless appeal and lasting comfort.
The first version features J55 Indigo 14oz Selvedge Denim, woven in Japan by Collect Mill. Inspired by 1950s denim, it maintains a structured, starched feel that softens over time. This is paired with Hickory Stripe 10oz Twill, woven by Kaihara Mill in Japan. With roots in workwear, this durable fabric was once used on railroads, prized for its resilience and ability to mask stains. It is also found in Blackhorse Lane Atelier’s E11 Raglan Chore Jacket and N1 Trousers.
The second version uses the same Ecru Denim as the standard Genie Chair, woven by Candiani, one of the world’s most sustainable mills. Made from 100% organic cotton, the fabric remains undyed and unbleached, showcasing its natural colour and subtle cottonseed flecks. This is paired with Wide Striped Indigo/Ecru Fabric from Berto Mills. The fabric is reversed to tone down the brightness of the indigo, offering a softer, more natural finish. This material is used in Blackhorse Lane Atelier’s SE8 Trousers.
Both versions retain the Genie Chair’s signature solid oak armrests, adding warmth and character, while the powder-coated steel frame offers a sleek, minimalist silhouette. Designed to blend seamlessly with modern interiors, the chair’s frame is intentionally subtle, allowing the fabric to appear as though it is draped over an invisible structure.
