Penguin Donkey Mark 2, 1963

Isokon Penguin Donkey Mark 2 by Ernest Race for Isokon Plus.

The Penguin Donkey Mark 2 was designed in 1963 after Jack Pritchard asked Ernest Race to reconfigure Egon Riss's original design to include a flat top that would allow it to be used as a side table.

Promotional literature for the updated Penguin Donkey describes the design as an "obliging creature" which "holds up to 90 paperbacks in two panniers … and provides a convenient chairside table for your tray of hors d’oeuvres, coffee cups, glass, ashtray, knitting or anything else you want to keep beside you.”

The founding traditions of Isokon have continued with the development and production of new products from contemporary designers. Isokon’s designs of the 1930s have endured as among the most important and original of the 20th century. The new designs sold by Isokon have become classics of this century, such as the pengiun donkey by Egon Riss and the long chair by Marcel Breuer.
