Akari 1AD Table Lamp by Isamu Noguchi for Vitra.
In 1951, the American-Japanese artist and designer Isamu Noguchi began designing the Akari Light Sculptures. Over the years, he has created over 100 models, naming the series "Akari", a term in Japanese that means brightness, lightness, and light.
All the light fixtures are produced in the Ozeki workshop in Gifu, the very town which inspired Noguchi to create the Akari.
Handcrafted, the Akaris undergo an intricate process that involves stretching bamboo rods over Noguchi's original wooden moulds to create the framework. Strips of Washi paper are then cut to match the lamp's size and shape and meticulously adhered to the bamboo ribbing. Finally, once the glue solidifies, the wooden form is removed, allowing the shade to be easily folded.
Herman Miller has the sole license for the Isamu Noguchi collection in the U.S. and the Far East. Therefore the export of these products from the UK to the U.S. is not possible.
