Akari 13A

Akari 13A Floor Lamp by Isamu Noguchi for Vitra.

The American-Japanese artist and designer Isamu Noguchi started designing the Akari Light Sculptures in 1951 after a visit to Gifu, a Japanese town recognised for its paper parasol and lantern production. Over the subsequent years, Noguchi crafted over 100 models, including the 13A. Noguchi gave the name "Akari" to this lighting series, which means brightness, lightness, and light in Japanese.

Each luminaire is meticulously crafted at the Ozeki workshop based in Gifu. The intricate process involves stretching bamboo rods over Noguchi's original wooden moulds to create the framework. Washi paper is then cut into strips tailored to the lamp's size and shape and adhered to the bamboo ribbing. Once the glue solidifies, the wooden form is removed, allowing the shade to be easily folded.

Herman Miller has the sole license for the Isamu Noguchi collection in the U.S. and the Far East. Therefore the export of these products from the UK to the U.S. is not possible.
