Akari 14A

Akari 14A Floor Lamp by Isamu Noguchi for Vitra.

The American-Japanese artist and designer Isamu Noguchi started designing the Akari Light Sculptures in 1951 and has since crafted over 100 models, including the 14A. Noguchi gave the name "Akari" to this lighting series, which means brightness, lightness, and light in Japanese.

Every light fixture is created in the Ozeki workshop in Gifu, a Japanese town renowned for producing paper parasols and lanterns. Gifu is also the very place that inspired Noguchi to design the series.

Handcrafted, the Akaris undergo an intricate process involving stretching bamboo rods over Noguchi's original wooden moulds to create the framework. Washi paper is then cut into strips tailored to the lamp's size and shape and adhered to the bamboo ribbing. Once the glue solidifies, the wooden form is removed, allowing the shade to be easily folded.

Herman Miller has the sole license for the Isamu Noguchi collection in the U.S. and the Far East. Therefore the export of these products from the UK to the U.S. is not possible.
