Karimoku was founded in 1940 by Shohei Kato in Kariya, Aichi, Japan, where he took over a longstanding timber company and established a small woodworking shop. Initially specialising in wooden components, the company ventured into furniture production in the 1960s, eventually becoming a leading furniture manufacturer in Japan.
In 2019, Karimoku launched Karimoku Case, a sister brand that works with leading architects worldwide to create collections which centre serene aesthetics and enduring design. The idea for the brand stemmed from the Case Study Houses of the 1940s, an experiment from the Arts & Architecture magazine, which commissioned the leading architects of the era, including Richard Neutra and Charles and Ray Eames, to design affordable and easily replicable model homes.
Committed to producing high-quality furniture, Karimoku's woodworking expertise is evident in its meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. Each year, the company invites collaborating architects to its Aichi facility, where they participate in workshops to become immersed in Karimoku's history and production capabilities.
